There are plenty of different kinds of cognac, and you’ve probably seen the VS, VSOP, and XO versions flying around. Just so you know, those letters DO mean something.

How To Drink It: Simply put a small amount (20-25 ml) in the bottom of the glass. Hold the glass in the palm of your hand (the more of your hand “touching” the cognac, the better) for about 10 minutes. The cognac should be warm when you drink it. Take a sip. Is there any bite to it? If there is, you didn’t wait long enough. There’s a reason people smoke cigars while drinking this. It’s a lounging drink, not a “getting drunk” drink.

Type of glass: Cognac Glass or Wine Glass (NOT a lowball glass)

First off, cognac can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways…ice can be ok, and you can mix it. The problem is, nobody seems to be doing it the right way, and it does make a difference with how it tastes. Cognac is a very aromatic drink with a TON of mild fruit undertones.

You see, the problem is, cognac is a different kind of drink than most liquors, but people are treating it very much the same. It’s true that it’s a type of brandy, but it’s not true that it’s similar to whiskey (we’ll get into whiskey etiquette at another time). There aren’t cognac’s that you are supposed to shoot. I don’t even understand why it’s a liquor that gets sold in shooters in the first place! Cognac is a drink that can be very flavorful with hardly any bite at all, you just have to be a bit more patient with it. So in light of this fact, I’m going to change up the typical dynamics that have become custom of our DOTW posts.

So it’s obvious to me that we need some education around these parts. Every time I go out, I see people ordering Hennessy. Forget the fact that it’s not the only decent cognac at the bars, Hennessy and Courvoisier are two of the better known brands. I blame it on the music…but I’m okay with that being a and fan. If Stagga Lee, however, would have ever repped any brand of liquor, I would have avoided it with all of my might.

Alright, so mixing it with coffee or coke isn’t technically wrong but…what the hell??!!?!?!? Did you just take a shot of Hennessy? Oh man…what kind of degenerate youth does this establishment invite? You weren’t serious, right? It was a joke?

And you! In the sweater vest! Yeah you, with the lowball glass drinking your Hennessy “neat!” Yeah, it’s not so neat if you’re doin’ it wrong, is it?

Here’s a ball-buster for ya’. You’ve been drinking cognac wrong. That’s right, you there, in that corner with the ice in your glass. You’re doing it wrong!
